6 Steps to Rapid Deployment of Cloud Virtual Desktops for Remote Working

The recent impact of Covid-19 has caused Governments to close non-essential work environments, pushing employees to work from home. For many organisations this presents an unprecedented challenge, of having the right technology in place to enable employees to continue their work and their level of output, whilst putting a much greater strain on finite maintained hardware.

One solution for meeting these new demands is a carefully designed Cloud remote working solution, allowing workers to get online rapidly and with full capacity using limited local hardware such as a laptop. It provides organisations the ability to create and assign virtual desktops and applications, utilising extensions of existing Active Directory credentials for management. In this series of blogs, I will look at what it takes for a business to successfully implement a journey to cloud.

This post will focus on companies who have historically never felt the need for cloud services and help them understand how straight forward it is to implement cloud-based technology. With the right people and skills, this does not have to be difficult. To cover the basics, we’ve put together 6 steps on the journey to cloud.

Step 1: Architecture Review & Design

We begin by performing a review of the current architecture and applications used by the target population alongside a definition of the requirements of the remote working solution. With a complete understanding of the landscape a Cloud Architect can design a remote working solution which maintains as many of the existing features as possible, while enabling enhanced security and connections to other Cloud services.

Step 2: Select A Solutions Provider

Multiple providers offer solutions in this space. Decisions on which provider to choose, must be made based on multiple factors including hardware requirements, quantity, pricing, duration, shared resources, additional features and more. Both Amazon and Microsoft have services which simplify the process of creating, assigning and managing virtual desktops.

Step 3: Security

Once you’ve decided on the provider, the production of a Cloud solution a base environment must be created to ensure the security and monitoring of the final product. User groups, permissions and more must be set up to enable development and maintenance.

Step 4: Service Development and Testing

Once the required users and controls have been created, individual services must be generated and tested. Cloud solutions rely on microservice architectures; the creation of individual services which perform limited functions, requiring connection to provide a full solution. Once each service is confirmed to be working in isolation, they must be connected and tested in combination to ensure functionality.

Step 5: Deployment

For end user’s, virtual desktop solutions often require the installation of an application on their local machine, either manually or remotely. Automating this rollout remotely to reduce change for the end user is optimal but if this is not possible, in bowser solutions are available so that virtual desktops can be accessed through Chrome and other web browsers without requiring an app installation. Once the initial solution is deployed new users can be added with minimal hassle and delay.

Step 6: Change Management

Of course, with the implementation of a remote solution comes the challenges of remote change management. However, due to the extensive nature of the subject we will be exploring this in full in episode 4 of this series.
